Facts About Cervical Cancer and HPV

Cervical cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the cervix (neck of the womb) that can cause severe damage to the cervix and surrounding tissues. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body and lead to death.
Cervical cancer is primarily caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).
HPV causes not only cervical cancer but also oral, mouth, and tongue cancers, as well as less common types like anal, penile, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.
In Nigeria:
- •Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women aged 15-44
- •About 12,000 new cases annually
- •8,000 deaths annually
- •This translates to 33 new cases and 22 deaths daily
